One person was killed and three others were injured, including a Montana Highway Patrol trooper, following two separate but related shootings late Thursday night and early Friday morning.
Shelley Hayes was killed in the first shooting Thursday night in Missoula, the Associated Press reported, and two others were injured as they left a Missoula bar.
Hayes and friend Casey Blanchard were picked up at the bar by Blanchard’s mother Julie when a Cadillac Escalade flashed its lights at them. One occupant exited the vehicle to see if the driver needed help, when the driver opened fire with an “AR-15 style rifle,” AP reported. Both Casey and Julie Blanchard were shot as well.
The Montana Highway Patrol trooper was in critical condition Friday, found still buckled in his patrol car after a separate shooting near the small community of Evaro. The Missoula County sheriff’s office says the man suspected in both shootings was arrested early Friday near Evaro.
The Department of Justice identified the injured officer as Trooper Wade Palmer. He was in critical condition at St. Patrick Hospital earlier in the day, DOJ officials said.
He was airlifted to Salt Lake City for treatment, the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department stated.
Palmer has been with MHP since 2012. Palmer has a wife and two young children.
Palmer, 35, was near the near the Evaro Bar and Casino when he located a suspected vehicle matching the description of one involved in a Missoula shooting before midnight, said John Barnes, DOJ spokesman.
