Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was booed at Comic-Con for admitting he enjoyed the fate of Jamie Lannister. The Game of Thrones star appeared at the annual event along with other brave co-stars Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Conleth Hill, John Bradley, Maisie Williams, Jacob Anderson, and Liam Cunningham. Before the panel even started, moderator Eddie Ibrahim tried to get the crowd on the same page by stating, “Even if we disagree sometimes… we do love all the content that is brought to us. We do love the shows and the movies,” which caused booing from the crowd.
The final Game of Thrones season was a bit divisive, to say the least, and HBO knew there would be some blowback at SDCC. Fans have taken their anger out on social media, going as far as to start campaigns to have the show rewritten and shot all over again. Even some of the cast of the hit HBO show were bummed on how it ended for their own characters. Jamie Lannister actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau actually enjoyed how it ended for his character. “I thought it was a great ending. I thought it was perfect for him to end in the arms of Cersei. It made sense to me,” said Coster-Waldau, which prompted a few fans in the audience to boo.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau handled the booing quite well and tried to reveal the rest of his opinion. One of his fellow Game of Thrones castmates chimed in and said, “There’s always one!,” which got some laughs from the crowd. The rest of the panel went on fine, but there are still some fans who feel like they were personally robbed by the final season and that the show creators and actors owe them something.
Game of Thrones may be over, but it’s alive and well at San Diego Comic-Con. There are still going to be cosplayers dressing as their favorite characters for the years to come and one clever fan even went as the infamous Starbucks cup (even though it wasn’t really a Starbucks cup) this year. The show isn’t going away any time soon and the actors involved in the show are still going to make appearances at the annual event, even if they get booed for stating their opinion. The legacy is there, even if some hardcore fans wish it had ended in a different way.
Game of Thrones entered the fanatical fandom phase very early on in its existence, much like the Star Wars franchise. And like the other aforementioned franchise, the series is getting the prequel treatment. It’s going to be very interesting to see how hardcore fans react to the new show when it is finally released and it will be even more interesting to see how George R.R. Martin decides to end his novels after all of the backlash. He claims it won’t have any influence, but it would be hard not to at this point.
